Hi Angela,
As I am doing this as a coach, I am wondering about the questions about mental health, since I am not being a therapist. I do like to ask clients if they have ever worked with a counsel or or therapist, and does the therapist know they are seeking work with a coach. I have never screened for suicidality Your thoughts.
Pam
Hello Pam, Great question! Psychological screening is a personal choice and should only be done with proper training. Screening for a good fit however is a good choice for anyone working with people as a coach or therapist. I clearly mark my forms that screening is not about diagnosis, which I am not trained in but am familiar with. Specifically for suicidality, I think everyone should know the major indicators even if they are not “legally” responsible to. I was trained to do this as a volunteer with a couple organizations. Canadian Mental Health has open programs, and I’m sure there are others across the world, to help the general public learn what to look for. It’s not illegal to ask someone if they feel like ending their life, and in fact, could save it.
