Mental Illness & Addiction
Addendium to the following video:
First, as a health & wellness coach you can get extra training to better screen for mental health issues that could be problematic. Just a few of the most important symptoms to screen for: hearing voices, wanting to ends ones life, disjoined/hurried speech, inability to pay attention to your questions, frequently randomly jumping from topic to topic, glazed eyes, slurred speech, bursts of emotion or no emotion when the context seems warrented. If you’d like more on screening, pop me an email. I’m happy to add additional modules to this course. When screening, we are not looking for any particular mental illness, only the inablity to function at a level where a coach is an appropriate measure.
Secondly, in this video I wasn’t clear about recovery. Recovery is possible. It is even possible without therapy! What I’m trying to emphasize is the limitations of coaching those with mental illness or addictions.
Third, if a client is already seeing a therapist or is functioning well (doing good in college/university, can keep a job, etc.) coaching can be of benefit for their overall health. If you want to learn more skills to help with depression and anxiety, I recommend taking the Feeling Great Coach cerfication.
